It’s time to interview — Joyce’s Career Tip of the Week

Even though the Fulton Schools Fall Career Fair is over, we are still in the middle of a peak season for campus recruiting. First- and second-round interviews will be taking place over the next several weeks, on campus, virtually and at company locations.

It is impossible to be over-prepared for an interview. Very often, it is the lack of preparation that eliminates candidates from further consideration in the hiring process. You need to research the company and the job description. Become familiar with the industry and competitors. Make a list of possible questions and practice your answers – out loud. Spend time evaluating and discussing your skills as they relate to the position.

Make a list of questions you want to ask the employer. Choose questions that show your willingness to contribute to the success of the organization. Remember that interviews are two-way conversations. Consider your career plans, your preferences and your values. Interviewers will be assessing how well you will fit into the organization. As you are meeting with and talking to these potential coworkers and managers, remember to consider how the organization and position will fit with your desired expectations.

The Fulton Schools Career Center website has several resources to help you prepare for interviews.  You also can make an appointment with a peer career coach for interviewing practice.

Remember, successful performance is the result of 90% preparation and 10% flawless execution!
