15 Fulton Schools students selected for the 2025 DAAD-RISE internship

Congratulations to the 15 students from the Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering at Arizona State University who have been selected for the 2025 German Academic Exchange Service Research Internships in Science and Engineering, or DAAD-RISE.
A total of 2,512 students applied from the U.S., U.K. and Canada, and only 250 awards were given.
DAAD-RISE enables undergraduate students from North American, British and Irish universities to complete a summer research internship at top German universities and research institutions.
For some students, the internship represents a perspective-altering experience because it’s their first time traveling outside the country. Not only will participants have the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most renowned researchers in their fields, but the students will also get exposed to a different way of life.
Participants research their topics of interest under the mentorship of doctoral students from the host universities while navigating a new culture. The internship typically lasts three months, and students earn a monthly stipend to cover daily expenses.
DAAD-RISE internships are supported by the Federal Foreign Office and were first offered in 2005 to promote student exchange to Germany in the fields of natural science, engineering and life sciences. The program also aims to motivate undergraduate students to learn more about Germany’s research landscape and study opportunities.
On April 8, 2025, this year’s DAAD-RISE winners, alumni and a few Fulton Schools faculty members met for an evening of celebration and to exchange tips before embarking on their exciting journeys.

Catherine Salgado, a program manager at the Lorraine W. Frank Office of National Scholarship Advisement at ASU, says she is excited for the students to experience a different lifestyle.
“I’ve been advising DAAD-RISE applicants at ASU since 2018, and it’s incredible to witness their transformation,” Salgado says. “Living and conducting research in Germany is a life-changing experience. Students return with lasting professional relationships and often turn to their DAAD mentors for graduate school or industry job recommendations.”
