BRIDGE to STEM is a pilot program at Arizona State University’s Ira A. Fulton Schools of Engineering for first-generation engineering students. Through workshops, speaker sessions, graduate mentoring and community-building experiences, BRIDGE helps students strengthen their sense of belonging, navigate campus resources and build the professional and research skills needed to apply for a summer research placement in summer 2027.

Whether you are curious about research, considering graduate school, exploring industry or still deciding, BRIDGE offers a structured space to grow with purpose. Scholars connect with graduate mentors who are living the research path right now, learn from first-generation professionals who have navigated the same road and get concrete, hands-on support with personal statements, CVs, outreach to faculty and the unwritten rules of working in a lab.

What BRIDGE scholars receive:

  • Workshops and speaker sessions: Research vs. industry, campus navigation for first-generation students, applications bootcamp, elevator pitch and lab survival skills.
  • Mentoring: Graduate research mentors and first-generation role models who share your background.
  • Community: A peer cohort of 10 scholars navigating the same path at ASU.
  • Scholar stipend: $700 ($350 per semester).
  • Duration: August 2026–March 2027. Foundation sessions in the fall, application-focused sessions in the spring.

Who can apply?

  • Undergraduate students enrolled in a Fulton Schools program (all majors and class years welcome).
  • First-generation college students.
  • Students are available to fully participate in BRIDGE activities from August 2026–March 2027.
  • Students interested in pursuing undergraduate research, with the goal of applying to a summer research placement (such as SURI) in 2027.

Apply to the BRIDGE to STEM pilot program by Friday, Aug. 7, 2026.

A maximum cohort size of 10 will be accepted into the program.
