The ASU project office for NASA’s Psyche mission seeks an experienced, organized and dependable engineering master’s student to assist in maintaining and augmenting existing mechanical, electrical and robotics capstone projects, helping mentor senior capstone student teams and engaging with the general public about Psyche at numerous events on and off campus.

Proven professional experience in the fields of mechanical, electrical or robotics engineering is required. Proven competency with engineering industry-standard software packages (such as Ansys, MATLAB, SolidWorks, AutoCAD, COMSOL, NASTRAN, ROS, KiCAD or similar) is required. Previous experience with public engagement activities and a successful background providing superior customer service in a professional environment is required.

The ideal candidate will have excellent organizational skills and attention to detail; enjoy learning new things and solving hands-on problems; have proven experience using rapid-prototyping and makerspace tools like 3D printing, laser cutting, and electronics equipment; enjoy communicating and interacting with the public and undergraduates; and have a proven ability to work independently and efficiently, as well as with a team of varied individuals.

This position is based at the Tempe campus and open to both hourly and federal work-study, or FWS, applicants.

Essential duties include:

  • Finalize, fix, extend and polish existing mechanical, electrical and robotics capstone projects, including extensive troubleshooting.
  • Assist with mentoring senior capstone teams from around the country in many different disciplines.
  • Assist with technology and technical questions from undergraduate students.
  • Assist with other engineering tasks as needed throughout the year.
  • Engage with the public and/or public speaking at the Psyche booth at public events (e.g., Homecoming, Earth & Space Day, ASU Open Door, etc.), including occasionally during evenings or on weekends.
  • Assist Psyche faculty, staff and students with administrative and events-related tasks as needed.
