They are seeking a student to work part-time, 20-25 hours per week with a flexible schedule, though they must commit for at least six months. This position is paid $13 per hour.

If you are a civil or transportation engineering major the City of Phoenix wants you to intern with the Street Transportation Department. Learn about how they tabulate crash reports, complete traffic studies and more!

The schedule is flexible, but they are looking for someone to commit 10 to 20 hours every week during normal office hours, weekdays 7:30 am–5:30 pm. This internship is unpaid.

They are seekings student interns to work on projects such as:

  1. Analysis of crash records. You will tabulate individual crash reports and pedestrian crash reports. Then, you will develop a report for the City of Phoenix website of collision statistics including frequencies, demographics and collision manner.  You will be expected to present results and periodic project updates to Department and City staff.
  2. Complete traffic studies. This may include safety studies, traffic impact studies, traffic signal timing studies, parking analysis, bicycle and pedestrian studies and traffic control warrant studies
  3. Signal Engineering assist with Traffic Signal Warrants, Hawk Warrants and Left Turn Arrow Warrants programs. This involves some spreadsheet work with Excel and fieldwork verifying left turn sight distance. There is also potential work with analysis of signalized intersections using the Synchro program for different traffic signal phasing and lane configurations at intersections.

Desired Skills

  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, GIS and AutoCAD
  • Knowledge of symbols and terminology used in civil, transportation or electronic engineering drawings
  • Knowledge of basic high school math including algebra
  • Ability to communicate well both verbally and in writing
  • Ability to work for large portions of the day on tasks unsupervised.
