Submit a MLK Jr. Servant-Leadership Award nomination by Oct. 1

Posted by on Sep 10, 2015 in Competitions, Nominations, Outreach, Spirit and Traditions |

This content is more than a year old. Find upcoming events on the calendar or recent news on the home page.

whyNotYouPosterAre you involved in service activities for the purpose of improving the well-being of people and the communities to which they belong?

As a leader do you aim to listen to, trust and empower others?

If so, nominate yourself or a fellow student for the 2016 ASU MLK Jr. Student Servant-Leadership Award.

Servant-leadership, as practiced by Martin Luther King, Jr., is a leadership style that promotes a service first mindset in one’s attempt to improve the well-being of individuals, communities and institutions. While traditional leadership generally involves the accumulation and exercise of power by one at the “top of the pyramid,” servant leadership is different. Servant leaders may or may not hold formal leadership positions, but rather share their power, put the needs of others first and help people develop and perform as highly as possible.

If you exhibit, or know a fellow student who exhibits, attributes of servant-leadership submit a nomination form. The ASU MLK Jr. Committee will provide a $1,000 scholarship to the awardee to be used towards his or her educational costs. Nominations are due Thursday, October 1, 2015 by close of business through campus mail to Michelle Johnson at MC 0205, fax 480-965-7663 or e-mail mmjcap@asu.edu.

Qualifications:

  • Must be an ASU student (undergraduate or graduate)
  • Must be currently enrolled full-time
  • Must exemplify the ideals of servant-leadership and have a track record of commitment through volunteer service
  • Must be able to attend the MLK breakfast (details below)

Candidates may submit a resume and letter of recommendation (no more than two) along with the nomination form. Self-nominations are encouraged. Finalists will be contacted for a 30-minute interview with the ASU MLK Jr. committee.

The Servant-Leadership Award will be presented at the MLK Breakfast on Thursday, January 21, 2016 at ASU’s West campus. This year’s theme is #REFLECTMLK.
