Compete for a new world record with Bayer, submissions due October 18

Posted by on Apr 27, 2018 in Competitions, Opportunities, Organizations and Teams |

Bayer wants you to compete in its second Alka-Rocket Challenge!

Now is your chance to design and launch an Alka-Rocket in a competition to create a new Guinness World Record for the highest launch of an Alka-Rocket.

An Alka-Rocket is a classic model rocket experiment,  often built with a 35-millimeter film canister and propelled by a chemical reaction of water mixing with the effervescent tablets. The challenge is open to student teams from four-year accredited universities in the U.S.

A panel of judges– including a NASA astronaut, the president of the National Association of Rocketry and an executive editor of Scientific American Custom Media– will select four finalist teams based on the design, execution and creativity of each rocket. The fifth finalist team will be the fan favorite, determined by public voting between October 22 and November 2, 2018.

The teams announced on November 5 will travel to Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in December to compete for $30,000 and a chance to hold the new Guinness World Records title.

Last year, the University of Minnesota set the record for the highest launch at 430 feet in the air, and they won $25,000. Think your team could be better?

Inventor to present highly innovative turbine technology in China

Posted by on Mar 20, 2018 in Faculty, Graduate Students, International Students, Organizations and Teams, Students |

The future has a big change in store for power generation and transportation. And, it starts with key advances in gas turbine technologies.

Professor Emeritus Joseph Y. Hui at Arizona State University has designed the Monarch Turbine Electric Airplane with an innovative gas turbine called the Jet Polygon Electric Generator. This generator powers multiple turbo electric fans so the aircraft can achieve lift and propulsion with over-the-wing airflow. The aircraft also has the capability to manipulate the direction of its engine’s thrust to achieve vertical take-off and landing. This design could be used for unmanned aviation vehicles and automated air taxis.
