Attend a kick-off event to become familiar with Truepic‘s technology and use it to help mitigate disinformation campaigns around upcoming mid-term American elections.

This kickoff event is designed to share Truepic’s photo and video verification technology (a downloaded app) which uses a number of metrics, technical assessments and analytics to verify an image or video as soon as it is taken, and then embeds that verification in blockchain to prevent image manipulation or falsification.

Truepic announces partnership with ASU’s Weaponized Narrative Initiative and Luminosity Lab

On October 3, Truepic announced an innovative partnership with Arizona State University’s Weaponized Narrative Initiative and Luminosity Lab to push back against disinformation ahead of mid-term elections in the United States. It can also serve as a model for similar programs with other student and youth civic engagement organizations across the country.

The Truepic app is available as a free download for both iOS as well as Android. An email address and an internet/data connection are all that’s needed to capture and share authenticated photos and videos anywhere online or privately. In addition, Truepic will also deliver its proprietary backend administration management system to its ASU partners so that students have the option to share authenticated images with the Weaponized Narrative Initiative and Luminosity Lab.

This pilot partnership has several other benefits. First, we are raising awareness of how blockchain can be used for image authentication and its intrinsic value in documenting the democratic process among a key constituency—young voters who are politically aware and engaged.

Second, the Weaponized Narrative Initiative and Luminosity Lab will be encouraging the ASU students and the broader community to use Truepic to share authenticated photos and videos on social media and among their own orbits. This is critical as we believe that one key way to truly undermine visual disinformation is to make authenticated content ubiquitous, and change user expectations such that they demand it before believing what they see shared online. We strive for the day when an educated public discounts or ignores manipulated images created to provoke and polarize society because they are not authenticated. We understand this is a long process, but this partnership the one of first steps towards that goal.

Finally, the initiative will provide our ASU partners with crowdsourced, user-generated content (of users who choose to share images) of known provenance and authenticity, by which they can study trends, events, and sentiment leading up to mid-term elections.

Although Truepic is a technology company, we do not believe the solution to disinformation is only a technical one. Of course, technology plays a key role, and we are working hard to help people regain trust in the photos and videos they see online, in the face of rising threats such as AI-generated deepfakes. Ultimately, the solution to these threats will be a “whole-of-society” approach; when technologists, legislators, media, academia, and, most importantly, citizens work together. We are proud to take this small step with ASU and look forward to learning, innovating, and replicating for the next two years leading up to the 2020 elections and beyond.
