Polytechnic Career FairThe Fulton Schools Spring Career Fair will be taking place next week! By the end of this week, you should have had your résumé reviewed and printed. Your professional attire should be ready to wear. You have looked over the employers who are coming and you are making lists and planning strategies to meet them.

Making a positive first impression is critical. When you introduce yourself, with a firm handshake, include your name and major. Say something that shows you know what the company does and why you are interested. Let them know if you are seeking an internship or a job after graduation.

In the time between now and next week, as you are researching companies and preparing for interviews, put yourself into the shoes of a recruiter and think about the qualities and experiences they will be seeking.

The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE) has identified the competencies that demonstrate “career readiness.” This list is the result of a task force comprised of representatives from higher education and corporations.

  • Critical thinking/problem solving
  • Oral/written communications
  • Teamwork/collaboration
  • Digital technology
  • Leadership professionalism/work ethic
  • Career management
  • Global/intercultural fluency

Read more about each of the desired competencies.

Take time to review your own experiences. Identify those that would make good STAR stories, illustrating each of the competencies and get ready for interviewing.
