Job search resources — Joyce’s Career Tip of the Week

Are you still looking for a summer internship or a job after graduation?

Positions are continually being posted in Handshake. Make sure that your profile is complete and your résumé is visible to employers so that recruiters will find you. Also, set up filters, under “Jobs,” so that you will receive emails about positions that meet your criteria.

LinkedIn is another resource for jobs, networking and company information. LinkedIn provides excellent training materials, specially created for college students.

ASU libraries have a subscription to “Mergent Intellect.” It is a database that provides access to private and public U. S. companies, international business data, industry news, fact, figures and industry profiles. Most of us are familiar with large companies but are unaware of how many mid-size and smaller organizations exist.

Mergent Intellect has listings for 953,571 companies in Arizona and 683,086 in the Metro Phoenix area. These numbers include companies that could be as small as one single person. I did a search and set 100 as the minimum number of employees corporate-wide. I found 196,054 in Arizona and 2,441 in Metro Phoenix!

I am quite confident that you would find companies that are probably not on your radar. Many of these companies have not been at college career fairs and may not be advertising on major job boards. Begin your search at the ASU library.

Next, click on “Research Databases” and then “Advanced Search.” You can then filter by location, size and industry. From the overview of company information, you can click to the company website for more details.

Peer career coaches are available to help you with your search. You can schedule an appointment through Handshake to meet with them.
