MBA Fellowship opportunity
The U.S. Department of State’s MBA Special Advisor Fellowship is accepting applications through Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024. This is a unique chance for MBA students or recent graduates to apply their skills to help modernize operations and support foreign policy. Fellows will collaborate with senior leaders on projects involving data analytics, strategic planning, human resources, logistics and financial management.
STEM opportunities
There are also three STEM-related diplomatic careers and a STEM-related fellowship currently open for students pursuing IT-related degrees:
- Security engineering officer
Security engineering officers provide technical security support and engineering expertise to protect U.S. Foreign Service facilities, information, and personnel overseas and in domestic locations. Responsibilities include working with all aspects of security systems – from design, development, and analysis to installation and testing.

- Security technical specialist
Security technical specialists provide support and assist in worldwide technical security programs that provide protection for U.S. Department of State facilities and personnel from technical espionage, acts of terrorism and crime. Their work is incredibly varied – managing projects and people, supporting dignitary travel, exploring the use of new technology and installing, maintaining and repairing a vast array of complex technical security equipment.

- Diplomatic technology officer
Diplomatic technology officers are part of a global team supporting and shaping the future of diplomatic technology. Areas of responsibility include physical infrastructure, customer support and system administration, and assorted topics (including data analytics, incorporating new and emerging technologies, supporting high-level visits, budgeting, deploying and maintaining end-user equipment and more).

- Foreign Affairs Information Technology Fellowship, or FAIT Fellowship
The FAIT Fellowship is one of four Foreign Service fellowships offered that pay for two years of the student’s education, offers two paid summer internships, provides professional development, and includes a guaranteed job as a diplomat upon graduation. For the FAIT Fellowship, we will either pay for the last two years of an IT-related bachelor’s degree or a two-year IT-related master’s degree and the student joins the Foreign Service as a diplomatic technology officer upon graduation.
