Play Minecraft and win prizes while helping to advance artificial intelligence research

Circuit board

SocialAI.games is a collaborative effort between industry, academia and government partners to advance the science of socially aware artificial intelligence. After creating an account and logging in, you’ll play a team-oriented Minecraft-based online game. Players will receive guidance from AI advisors, contribute to science and have the opportunity to win multiple prizes. There are two ways to participate: the Research Assitant Volunteer Position and simply participating by playing games.

Players must be at least 18 years of age, reside in the United States and have a Minecraft account to play with a mouse and keyboard.

The Research Assistant Volunteer Position involves these activities:

  • Participate in a three-person Minecraft game for five to 10 hours per week in September and October. Breaks are acceptable. Players are eligible for the weekly prizes and grand prize.
  • Learn the experimental design and science behind the Minecraft study in November.
  • Data analysis is optional, which could lead to a thesis. Participants are eligible for one to three research credits for the Psychology 101 class and thesis course credit a semester, depending on involvement.

If you are interested in the Research Assistant Volunteer Position, please email Lixiao Huang at [email protected].

Participants only: If you do not want to play this many hours and are not interested in the research aspect, it is totally fine to just play a few games whenever you want to and win the weekly prizes.

The server is available 24/7, but the game requires three players to form a team. Participation from 5–8 p.m. (8–11 p.m. ET) is encouraged each day to have more players online at the same time to form teams. Or, you can bring two friends to play with you at any time you choose.
