Are you interested in exploring how humans can prepare for an interplanetary future and learning about the relationship between humans and our universe? Enroll in IPI 194 Special Topics: The Universe, Our Interplanetary Future, and You this fall.

How can humans understand our role in the universe when the universe is more than 13 billion years old and we measure our lives in decades? How can we explore beyond our Earth when it takes light itself 94 billion years to cross the universe and we have only gone as far as the moon, just 1.3 seconds of light travel away?

In this course you’ll explore the relationship between humans and our universe, and how we can prepare for our interplanetary future. You’ll learn to ask better questions, dig into the unknown, and make ourselves more effective in pursuing our own goals and goals for the best of humanity’s future. This course is for future scientists, technologists, creative writers, ethicists, lawyers, journalists, policymakers, artists, designers, engineers, historians, social scientists, health care providers and more — students from all majors are not only welcome but needed to make this class a success.

Course objectives

This class is a new kind of experience for almost all students, and what we look for is progress toward curious, active learning and sharing in a team as the course progresses. We aim for a strong positive class culture, supporting each other as we learn together. The class will work together to conduct research and reach an understanding on a large goal question: What is the relationship between humans and our universe, and how can we prepare for our interplanetary future?
