Arizona State University informatics major Brinlee Kidd and industrial engineering major Sylvia Lopez won the Red Bull Basement Global competition with their note-taking app Jotted.

Just like many students, Kidd and Lopez wanted to make the learning and note-taking process easier, so they created Jotted. The app allows students to upload their notes, which are automatically organized by class in folders. Then, Jotted uses the notes to create digital flashcards and quizzes to practice each subject. The pair of student entrepreneurs were recently featured on ABC 15 Arizona.

Kidd and Lopez are researchers in the Luminosity Lab, an interdisciplinary research and development lab with a team of high-performing students who design, build and deploy innovative solutions to important real-world challenges. The Luminosity Lab recently joined the Fulton Schools to leverage resources and support of the nation’s largest engineering school.

SISLThe Social Innovation Startup Lab, or SISL, hosted by the technological entrepreneurship and management program is an incubator-style, 12-week crash course for social entrepreneurship ventures aiming at social impact. This course allows students to collaborate with industry and explores the use of technology in projects that have the potential to benefit society. Teams may partner with Intel and NXP Semiconductors during their time in SISL.

Each session includes lectures and discussions led by companies experts, mentors, ASU faculty and other guest speakers. Mentorship is provided as students develop their business model, incorporate innovation and design, design prototypes and pitch and iterate. Groups collaborate during teamwork hours in the Makerspace HUB249 located in Chandler, AZ, to work on conceiving and prototyping their projects.

*New this semester: Students may apply to have their social startup project selected for development in a team-based setting or participate as a team member in a project that interests them the most. The teams may receive an e-seed grant to invest in their venture through a pitch competition at the end of the course.
